PORTUGUESE AFFAIRS

RELIGIOUS STRIFE

LISBON, January 11

The Republicans at Outairo destroyed a much-revered image of the Lady of Lonrdes in the neighbouring village of Assentis. Two thousand Catholics thereupon marched to Outairo, and a fierce fight followed, in which five were killed and 40 seriously wounded. The cavalry and infantry finally re-established order.

Both Parliament and press are favourable to the Government's bill for legalising gambling, and opening luxurious casinos in the chief towns and granting licenses to the highest bidders. A British syndicate, with a capital of £1,000,000, has offered to build casinos at Lisbon and Cintra similar to those at Monte Carlo.
