CABLE MATTERS
MELBOURNE, January 2. The Pacific Cable Board has informed the Federal Government that the new cable from Sydney to Auckland will cost £155,000. The total value of the New Zealand cable traffic is now £30,000 per annum. Of Jdiis amount the board, working one cable, has been handling £20,000. By reductions of staff and other economies the new cable is expected to save £6OOO a year. It is to be laid during the present year. The Postmaster-general (Mr Frazer states that, unless further concessions tfaareduced rates for deferred messages ar speedily forthcoming, the Federal Govern ment will press for the convening of a subsidiary conference to consider the question of nationalising one of the Atlantic, cables.
