The company was unfortunate on its opening night, for its principal tenor, Mr Noel Fleming, was unable to appear, and his place was taken by his understudy. Mr Fleming had a severe attack of laryng - t,i s and. dcsoite all medical attention could do, had to remain out of the oast for two nights. He is duo to make his first appearance to-night. But what Dunedin people will bo more intended in is how Miss Amy Murphy fared. Well, all the critics agree that the talented young lady has Improved out of all knowledge". Even her warmest admirers wore sui-prised at the excellence of her work in every direction. She ivas most successful in everv wav--singing, acting, and dancing. Tho audience took her to its cumulative heart, and gave her a demonstrati re reception.' You will be pleased with your G. Swan and L. Muir, who are interested in the building of a new theatre at Wanganui, were in town this week In connection with the project. Tho new theatre is to be a most up-to-date every particular, and will seat about 1 1 00 people. Mr G. L. Petersen, the touring manager for Wiriih’s Circus, arrived at the beginning of the week, and has had b. moststrenuous timo in searching for a site. There are no vacant spaces in the city proper capable of housing the circus, and the site generally used by this class of show, near Te Arc Railway Station, is now ’ occupied. Mr Petersen has been fored to take a site on the Thorndon reclamation, near the Manawatu Station. This is somewhat out of town, but was the best that could be done. But tho drawing power of a circus is great indeed, and there is no doubt but what Wirths will dc a good and profitable business. . Mr Nelson Illingworth, who is wellknown in musical circles in Sydney, is here on a visit to his parents. Miss Muriel Bennett, a local soprano, has been offered and has accepted an engagement from J. and N. Tait to tour with the Huddersfield Bellringers. Madame Emily Spada, wife of, Mr Philip Newbury, arrived from Sydney this week. She will sing at her husband’s concert in Auckland. . ... , T Word has been received hero that Mr Henry Bracy, the veteran tenor and stage manager of the Royal Comics, has been seriously ill* At latest advices he was making for recovery. Our next big attraction will be H. B. Irving and his company. We are waiting anxiously for the treat The rnan\ local picture shows all report that big business continues.
