PORTOBELLO ROAR BOARD.

The monthly meeting was held on Thursday, there being present—Messrs J. M. Dickson (chairman), Miller, Bacon, Johnston, Macandrew, and Seaton. A deputation from the Otago Motor Cycle Association waited on the board. The deputation consisted of the captain (Mr Munro), the vice-oaptain (Mr logo), and the secretary (Mr Thorn). The deputation requested the board to open the beach road for 'motor cycle traffic. Mr Munro explained the rules whereby the motor cycle traffic was controlled by the club as far as its 125 members were concerned, and pointed out that it was to the club’s interests and motor' cyclists’ interests also, that the traffic should bo under control for the safety of the public and the motorists, and said that his club would bo careful to meet the wishes of the board in the matter. Ho gave the board to understand that the club made stringent rules to be observed by its members as to the public safety, and would do so to meet the traffic on its roads if permission was granted for motor cycles to make use of them. Mr Fogo also addressed the board in confirming what Mfr Munro had stated, and the secretary (Mr Thorn) also addressed it to further the object of the deputation. The chairman pointed out that the by-law passed by the Road Board held good for motor cycles, and that a counter-petition had been sent in by the ratepayers of Bread Bay and Portobello. — Mr Allan Johnston put a motion before the board that, consideration of the matter bo deferred till the next meeting, which was seconded by Mr S. Miller, and carried. Mr D. G. Ker sent in his resignation as a member of the board.—The chairman ex pressed his regret that Mr Ker had resigned, as he had proved a useful member, and Mr John Bacon moved that his resignation be accepted with regret. —Mr W. D. Wright, an old member of the board, was absent for the third time consecutively, and thus his seat became vacant under the act of 1908. The returning officer (Mr Alfred Reynolds) was instructed tc advertise the extraordinary vacancies caused by the resignation of Mr Ker and the absence of Mr Wright, and invito nominations for them. —It was proposed by Mr Miller that the clerk write to Mr Porterfield, the retiring returning officer, to thank him for his past and faithful services to the board. The motion was seconded by Mr Macandrew, and carried with acclamation. The inspector’s report for the month of December was read, and stated that considerable damage had been done to the roads under the board’s control by the gale of November 29. and later on by the floods on December 24, . Mr A. Morit/sbn wrote, on loehalf of the Broad Bay Amenities Society, requesting the services of the beard’s Surfaceman On the plantation at Broad Bay, The request was refused, on account of the man being too busy otherwise to attend to the matter properly* . Betters were received trom the Public Works Department, Wellington, wishing for further particulars in re 40ft roads and 53ft roads in the townships of Newbury,

Seatoun, and Portobello, and also .requesting sketch plana of the townships and their roads.—The clerk was instructed to procure th© sketch plans and write to the Minister of Public Works urging the necessity of meeting the request of tho residents to bring these streets under the Public Works Act of 1908, as provided for in sub-section I of section 117, Mr Miller moved that tho dog tax for th© current year be tho same, as last.—The motion was seconded by Mr Bacon, and carried, Mr James Macandrew moved;—“That it bo advertised that any rates not paid before February 1 next bo charged 10 per cent, penalty from that date. Tho motion was tcccnded by Mr D. Seaton, and carried.— The dork stated that he would, be in attendance at tho board office at Portobolla on Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. regularly, and also would be in the vicinity for three or four days in the week to receive the rates for the oonvenienc of the ratepayers. On a motion by Mr D. Seaton, seconded by Mr Miller, the monthly accounts were passed.
