Considerable surprise appeared on the face of the manager of a drapery establish* ment at Wlin.nga.iei when a Maori, whs bad made a ibw purchases, coolly planked down a cheque for £sool evidently the proceeds of a land sale. The contents of the till and of the manager's pockety were towether short of the requisite change.
