WAR AGAINST TRUSTS
PACKERS ON TRIAL. NEW YORK, December 27. Details which have been revealed at the packers’ trials in Chicago show that in 1902 a plan was arranged to merge the Armour, Swift, and Morris interests with a view to controlling the United States meat industry. A capital of £100,000,000 was involved. The plan was abandoned, being unworkable at that time. December 30. At the trial of the Chicago packers direct evidence was offered as to the existence from 1393 till 1896 of a packers’ pool. After a suspension of two years the pool resumed control of the fresh meat trade of the country. The packers met and fixed prices every Tuesday afternoon. All communications were exchanged through the post office. WASHINGTON, December 30. House committees will be selected to investigate the affairs of the Shipping and International Harvester Combines, and also the money trust.
