WEALTH AND POVERTY

A SERIOUS PROBLEM. DUTY OF THE CHURCHES. LONDON, December 29. Addressing a religious conference at Cardiff, Mr Lloyd George said that the spasmodic appeals on behalf of charity were hopelessly inadequate remedies for the existent social problems that must be remedied. They might just as well try to run the army and navy by means of voluntary subscriptions. There was in Great Britain to-day more poverty than ever, yet there was a sufficiency of wealth in the country to make provision for successfully combating with these social troubles. But they could not touch any one evil without finding that vested interests actually flourished thereon. The duty of the churches was to compel the rulers of the country to realise their responsibilities to the people at large.
