LAND SETTLEMENT.

RUNS BALLOTED FOR. TIMARU, December 22. At the ballot for five runs in the Mackenzie Country W. Hunt, of Timaru, drew No. 1; F. L. MacGregor, FairJie, No. 2; Charlotte Black, Kimbell, No. 3; G. Haskin, Ashburton, No. 4; and Ellen Gould, Raincliff, No. 5. There jwere 246 applicants for the five runs, the area of which ranges from 2200 to 20,080 acres. ESTATE PURCHASED BY THE GOVERNMENT. ASHBURTON, December 23. The Government has- acquired for closer settlement purposes Mr G. W. Leadley's Valuenda Estate, of 2305 acres, in the Wakauui district, and about nine miles from Ashburton. It is intended to cut it up into 10 or 11 sections, and the ballot will probably eventuate about April 1.
