OWAKA SHOW.

The Owaka A. and P. Society held its fourth annual show on Thursday. Considering the unsettled climatic conditions prevailing lately, the society can count itself fortunate in getting a good day, although there were two light showers in th© afternoon, which served to emphasis© the wisdom of one being prepared in mid-summer for all sorts of weather. There was a good attendance of farmers and their families, nearly every home "down the branch" being lepresented, while Balclutha and neighbouring towns sent a fair quota 01 visitors. The " gate" was estimated to be about £+o. Th© entries—exclusive of competition events —totalled 347 —a record, — against 30'2 last year. In a dairy district th© outstanding feature of a show is, of course, cattle. It was this section which aroused the most interest on Thursday. In the opinion of the judges, the display of cattle was a most creditable one, mor© particularly when, with th© exception of Ayrshire classes, all th© entrants were local beasts. Mr J. Campbell (Invercargill), who reaped success with his Ayrshires at Invercargill show, brought several of his animals to Owaka, and "swept the board" in that particular. Of other strains, Jerseys, shorthorns, and crossbreds were most in evidence, and the judges, commented favourably on th© stock. JVext to the now on a dairy farm comes a spring-cart horse. This was a big ring, and the judges summed it up as th© best they had seen at a country show, and fit for honours iii the Dunedin show. Other classes of light horses were well competed in, the roadsters being generally counted good stamps, but the thoroughbreds showed room for improvement. Merit amongst draught horses was fairly even, but Mr J. Charters's (Mosgiel) entrant was easily awarded the laurels as the best Clydesdale on th© ground. Sheep, though brought forward well, did not elicit much competition, the Catlins district not being a sheep country'. The entries in dairy produce wer© mor© than double last year's number, and in this honours were widely distributed between local ladies for the most part. Mr C. Spears (Owaka) provided an excellent luncheon for th© society and judge®. In addition to his booth, there wer© three other refreshment stands on th© ground, while a number of vehicles and machines wer© exhibited by local and Balclutha tradesmen and agents. • The Kaitangata Pipe Band assisted to liven th© day 1 up. All the office-bearers- worked zealously towards the success of the show, the president (Mr J. Ford) and secretary (Mr H. T. Stodart) willingly bearing, the brunt. Following is the prize-list:— CATTLE. "~~~~~' Judges: Messra A. M'Farlane (Dunedin) and W. J. Charters (Mosgiel). SHORTHORNSBull,* three years and over. Thre© entries—G. S.
