PROTECTION OF BIRDS

SYDNEY, October 12. Bird Day, the object of which is to inculcate the need of protection for native birds, was inaugurated yesterday and largely celebrated in the State schools. The Hon. Mr Carmichael, in an address dealing with the value of birds to settlers, referred to the wanton mischief wrought through ladies wearing birds' plumage for the sake of adornment. The remedy was to ""wear artificial plumage—that is, if ladies must have this -style of adornment.
