AN ISLAND TRAGEDY

CAPTAIN BROETTER MURDERED

SYDNEY, October 4. The German mail steamer brings news of the murder of Captain Broetter in German New Guinea.

Captain Broetter's schooner, which carried a crew of four Europeans and 20 natives, was exploring the north-west of Friedrich Wilhelmshaven.

Captain Broetter and another European were examining the river when they were surrounded by natives. Captain Broetter was fatally speared, but his companion escaped by floating down the river on a log. The schooner has disappeared, and it is feared that she foundered in a storm with all hands.

Th« German authorities despatched a punitive expedition to the scene of the

murder.
