VIOLETS.

Perfume of violets stealing in Thro' the silent sunlit air, Filling the room with a presence sweet, Haunting me everywhere.. Memories glad, and wistful, and sad, AH interwoven together, With the delicate odour of violets In the dawn of September weather. Glad, for the gladness that used to be, As a friendship for old time's sake; Wistful for lonely joys once shared, Sad fcr a life-line's break! Deep, deep down in thair purple lies The anguish of souls that part, And a last love-gift,—in a long life-chain— That I laid o'er a pulseless heart. Violets will bloom while the seasons roll, Vainly we'll watch for them—never p But the Dead—the Dead will never come back From the Land of the long " Forever." —FJVELEEN S. CHAINEY. Hamilton. -
