DUNEDIN D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motfo: “Union is Strength." The usual weekly meeting of the dull was held on Tuesday evening, May 23, in the clubroom. Harry presided over the meeting, which was attended by 14 me rubers. The subject for the evening was a debate; “Is it likely that. England will sink into the Decay which bslel the- Nations of Antiquity?” Lady Ester led for the affirmative side, supported by Thelma, Millie, Harry, Patriotic Paul, and Lavinia —the two last named sending their papers by post. For the other side the leader was Happy Wag, supported by Possum, Francis, and Texas Jack, Many of the members led off into side issues, such as, “If she does fall, who will take her place?” But there was a capital assortment of arguments on both sides, so much so that it would be unfair to. quote or make extracts from, any of them, as on© and all were so exceptionally good, and there were so many papers in hand'. I will content mvaelf with giving in full th© paper brought forward by the loader of the wmmng side, the negative, wlics: cause was ably championed by Happy Wag. Special mention should be made of Millie, one of the youngest of our active club members, who made her literary debut on Tuesday. . The club (through the secretary) acknowledge’ '■eecipt of tickets for the Invercargill Club’s social accompanied by a kindlylittle note from Lavengro (is that go ?), secretary of that club. Our members are sincerely grateful fcg the thoughtfulness prompting the sending of the tickets., and the generous offer of assistance to euch of our members as ar© able to. be present. Many of us would be only too glad to hay© the opportunity, but, unfortunately, as in my own rase, one cannot be in two places at the one time, and duty holds me here; so 1. tor one., must forego the pleasure. We trust that the social will be the brilliant success it deserves to be, and that our fellow L.F. iu the south may have “the time of their lives.” Next meeting (May 30) is open meeting. Syllabus for June: June 6.—Debate, “Should the Press bo Totally Free?” June 13.—Social meeting. Juu© 20.—Debate, “Is Corporal Punishment Justifiable?” June 27.—Open meeting. EOXANA, Hon. Secretary.
