INVERCARGILL D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motto, “Excelsior.” Tli© usual weekly meeting of the abova club was held in the rooms, Y.M.C.A. Build-

ires, Tay street, on W«inesday evening the 25th May, at 8 o'clock. Shasta (president) occupied the chair, and the minute* of two previous meetings were read and duly confirmed. , _. . , —New Members and Tickets.— Two new member* were offered a hearty welcome on behalf of the club by the president, and it is hoped that they will continue to attend and take an interest in ciub matters generally. No doubt m time I will be able to give yeu their noms deplume, but these have not so far transpired. Anyhow, the new clubites have taken away some social tickets, which they have promised to sell—hot to try and sell. In thus connection I would like to impress ticketholders with the urgent necessity of eelhng their tickets. For, as our expenses will be heavy, wo would like those interested to put their shoulders to the wheel and push the sales for all they are worth. I have it on good authority that one of the sellers on our ticket list has ridded the club of 15 ticket* to date (of course, "to date means to the 25th May, 1911), and is still going strong Would othera please endeavour to do likewise?. There is really nothing to prevent \hoso holding tickets selling three to six, or even more. All you require is push. I won't say anything about tact, or principle either, but would ask everyone to do their share. By the time this appears in print the social will bo just about a week and a day ahead of us, and I would ask those who have not so far secured tickets to get same at once. Country members can write, and those in town can made a point of seeing club members. We know you will all attend the concert, social, and dance, but it would greatly facilitate matters if you procured tickets at onoe. —The Meeting.— Our special subject was "Patriotism," and three excellent papers were received. Each paper was by a well-known D.L.F., and so it would be superfluous to add criticism. The writers were Shasta, Kirkana. and Oct-ava, and the subject received all-round treatment in these respective and accomplished hands. —A Letter From Gravel. — A letter was received from Gravel thanking members for their kind sympathy at the time of sad bereavement. Gravel stated that his reply was belated, and also states that his health has not been too good lately. lie also promises to write a paper soon. It is obvious that Gravel is very much interested in the Invercargill Club and in D.L.F. matters, and the page generally, and I would like to ask any and all D.L-.F. to drop a note to Gravel occasionally. Do not be afraid that he will be deluged with letters, wheu you consider his circumstances —imprisoned in a chair all day, and only able to hold osrtain fixed positions, and that his only recreation is book-reading, letter-reading, and letter-writing, the latter of which is accomplished under the greatest of difficulties, for Gravel writes in such a manner that he cannot sea what he is writing until the whole page is finished. And yet, with all these drawbacks, and illhealth into the bargain, whiefi" prevents him answering all the letters he would like to — with all these drawbacks ho is ab'e to write a good hand and a very excellent epistle. His address is: Mr A. R. Urquhart (Gravel), care of Mr Jenkins, Lake View Farm, Arrowtown. He says: "The death of my father .made a great change in my life. I had to leave my old heme at Lake Hayes, where I had lived since I was born. Therefore you can guess I felt it a great deal." In conclusion I can only say —don't omit to write Gravol, D.L.F. —The Sooial. — Business in connection with the social concluded the evening. LAVENGRO, Secretary. Address: 200 Spey street, Invercargill.
