MANSLAUGHTER.
AUCKLAND MOTORMAN FINED £25
AUCKLAND, May 29. At the Supreme Court this morning Mr Justice Edwards passed sentence on William Ernest Dawe (motorman), found guilty at the last session of the manslaugn.!er of a fellow-motormaJi by the bumping of on© tram into another. His Honor said the fact that earlier in the evening the prisoner had- a shock through narrowly missing a drunken man should have made him more cautious. The plea that his attention had been distracted by the constant ringing of the bell wae no excuse for inattention to what was in front. His -Honor was inclined to think that the accident was the result of miscalculation of the speed of the cat and getting too close to a standing car ahead. Taking into consideration the good character of the prisoner, the jury's recommendation to mercy, 'and the views of the judges of the- Appeal Cowt the prisoner would be leniently dealt with. A fine of £25 was imposed.
