A VICAR PUNISHED

LONDON, March 16. The Rev. John Lax, vicar of Stainmore, Westmoreland, has been, deprived of his living, consequent on the finding of the Consistory Court that he had been guilty of misconduct.

[The vicar was a married man. In September, 1909, he and his schoolmistress were waylaid by a band of masked men. The vicar was bound, gagged, and tarred, and a mock service was read over him. Subsequently eight young parishioners were arrested, convicted of the offence, and fined £5 each.]
