THE COMMONWEALTH.

MELBOURNE, January 25.

The final payment to the States under the Braddon clause was completed yesterday. SYDNEY, January 24.

Mr Kidston (Premier of Queensland), who is visiting Sydney, states that he is emphatically hostile to the Federal Government referenda proposals. Mr Holman (State Attorney-general) has arrived from New Zealand. He says that his position regarding the referenda proposals is in favour of the amendment to the constitution empowering the Commonwealth to acquire monopolies, but in common with some of his colleagues he will urge the people not to accept the amendment enabling the Commonwealth gradually to absorb the/most important of the State legislative functions. January 25. The labour secretaries strongly resent Mr Holman's recent statement that one of the referendum questions was of a sort to interfere with State legislation. ADELAIDE, January 26. The sum of £1835 has been advanced under the Advances for Homes Act.
