ANTI-MODERNISM

BERLIN, January 30,

Prussia recently required the exemption of professors of Catholic theology in Prussian universities from the antiModernist oath, arguing that they were Prussian officials, and that the oath would deprive them of their independence as teachers.

It was offically understood that the Vatican had yielded, but a letter from the Pope which the Archbishop of Cologne now publishes expresses the conviction that while professors not holding church benefices should be exempted they should, rather than bow before men inspired with a hate against the Catholic faith, be the first to take the oath in order to show their independence. The letter has caused a great outburst in the press. Even the Krueg Zeitung accuses the Pope of internationally provoking a conflict with the Prussian Government.
