CAPTAIN SCOTT'S EXPEDITION,
HOBART, September 19.
Captain Scott did not, as expected, arrive by the Tongariro. Mr Day, who has charge of the motor sledges for the expedition, says that Captain Soott decided at the last moment to make a little longer sojourn in South Africa lecturing up-country in aid of funds for the expedition.
POSSIBILITY OF WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY. CHRISTCHURCH, September 19. In connection with the Antarctic expedition, the Prime Minister has informed the Philisophical Institute that the wireless station to be established at Bluff will have a radius of 1250 miles in the daytime, and -uj) to 2500 at night. If .the station is erected in time, it ehoulci be possible to communicate with Captain Scott's expedition from New Zealand, provided t.h fi intention to erect a wireless station in the Far South is carried out. It is suggested that arrangements might be made for a warship to bridge the gap between the Antarctic and New Zealand at times to be agreed upon. Mr R. Speight, assistant curator at the out to a reporter that the distance between Antarctica and Bluff was, roughly, 1500 miles, and if it is possible, as stated in Sir Joseph Ward's letter, to communicate up to 2500 miles, it will be possible to establish commuru cation with the base at M'Murdo Sound, some 500 miles further south. As regard* fuel for driving the dynamo Mr Speight stated that any difficulty in this respect migh*. be overcome By burning petrol instead of coal for the purpose of obtaining power.
