BOWLING.

Secretaries are requested to forward particulari of games played and of forthcoming matches.

NOTES BY JACK. The Mornington Club passed a resolution irr favour of holding an Easter tournament in Dunedin, and also the holding of a tournament during Christmas week in the season that the association tournament is held in Christchurch. It was further decided to request the delegates to endeavour to have- the association tournament held during New Year week. This is a somewhat large order, and unfortunately displays what other clubs outside Dunedin Centre may consider a selfish spirit. If a tournament is held in Dunedin during the Christmas holidays, and the association tournament at Christchurch during the New Year week, the Canterbury people would have a grievance, as also would the South Otago Centre, whose New Year tournament would be interfered with. There is something to be said in favour of holding the association tournament in February instead of at the end of Jarnuary. but it is> difficult to imagine reasons for holding it at New Year. Bowlers are interested in many other things besides bowling about New Year time, and it would be safe to prophesy that if the change were made the entries would be reduced by one-half, and few outside the local centre would take part. The Caledonian Club held an enjoyable smoke concert on Monday, May 23, when the club prizes were presented to the winners as follows—Champion* Rink—G. Haydon, L. Warsaw, J. North, G. Capstick (skip); Champion Doubles—W. Good let and W. Weir (skip); Champion Singles— J. Scott 1, W. Weir 2; Handicap Singles— J. Scott 1, W. Weir 2; Blaney's Bowls— J. A. Forbes 1, W. He nigh an 2. As is always the case, the concert was a success. The speeches were brief, while the 6ongs and recitations were much appreciated.

The Caledonian Club's annual report has been circulated by Mr A. "W". Brown, the indefatigable hon. secretary, who is the right man in the right place. The report congratulates members on the cp'endid progress made during the year. The playing area has again given satisfaction, notwithstanding the flooding it received at the commenoemnt of the season. The surroundings have been greatly improved. The north and south banks have been raised some 15in, the east bank has been slightly raised, the macrocarpa hedge at th'Q south end of the pavilion (which wasshowing signs of decay) has been removed, giving increased accommodation, there, and the extra space has been sown down in English grass. On the same side of the green a new double picket fence has been erected in* place of the old one, and a holly hedge has been planted. This hedge now surrounds the whole back portion of the club's grounds. The sanitary arrangements have been improved, and the flower _ borders have been added to. The following fine record was obtained by the club in the matches played during the season:—Saturday matches: Played 16. won 12, lost 4. Wednesday matches: Played 13, won 10, lost 3. Two wins were secured against Milton in home-and-horne matches. The Lawrence Club sent a team to try conclusions, victory resting with the Caledonian. The hank balance shows a credit of £37 15s 3d, which is highly satisfactory considering the extra expense the club has been out to this year in improving- the ground. Good entries were received for the cluh's prizes, and some very keen contests eventuated. The club was strongly represented*at the various tournaments. J. Veiteh. H. Campbell, H. Martin, and D. Smith (skip) secured third prize in the N.Z.B.A. tournament in January. At Oamaru, G. Haydon, J. Veiteh, W. H. M'Lecd, and D. Cormack (skip) secured second place for the Phoenix Prize, J. Veitch and D. Cormack second in the Last Try Pairs, and J. Dey and J. Scott third in the Ass:ciation Pairs. At the South Otaa-o Centre's tournament, W. H. M'Leod and- D. Cormack won the first prize for Doubles. Only the required number of nominations of office-bearers has been received by the Caledonian Club, as follows: —President, Mr C. F. Greenslade; vice-presidents, Messrs W. H. M'Leod and A. F. Brown: hon. treasurer, Mr A. J. Sinclair: hon. sscretary. Mr A. W. Brown ; committee— Messrs R. Powley, A.' M'Donald, D. Cormack, H. M'Lauchlan. and J. North : selector. Mr J. Scott: auditors. Messrs W. A. Smith and F. Foley; delegates to centre, Messrs C. E. Keast and J. Scott. The Dunedin Club's two-rink green is still open, and playing really well. Some of the unfinished club ties have been got off during the past few days. In the rink ga.mo W. M'llvvrick's rink beat W. Dall's and won the prize. At the annual meeting of the Caledonia.n Club a motion will be moved to adopt the following as a bv-law: —" No member shall be allowed to take part in any club prize match unless his bowls have fceen tested, passed, and stamped bv the official bowl tester of the N.Z.8.A." If this is adopted, and other clubs follow this example, the matter of "pokers" will be in a fair way towards a settlement. At a meeting- of the Mataura Club the secretary reported that there was a deficit of about £2O on the season's operations. Subscriptions were taken up in the room, and some £8 collected. It is anticipated that the deficit will be wiped off before the beginning of the next season. CALEDONIAN BOWLING CLUB. The annual meeting of the Caledonian Bowline: Club was held in the pavilion on May 30. Mr W. M. M'Leod occupying the chair. The report presEnted has already been published. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, said the, club was on the up grade, and he hoped it would continue so. They had been at a great deal of expense during the past 7,-ear in raising the banks, but he did not think the expenditure would be so heavy during the incoming season. They intended to take the ibedgo down on the western bank niter the ditch was filled In. There would be a proposal to alter the ditches somewhat. As to the record of the club in matches., it was considerably better than the previous year's.

The report and balance sheet were adopted. Office-bearers as nominated above were elected. Mr C. Russell Smith wrote that the question of holding a<n Easter tournament had been discussed by the Dunedin Centre, and he intended to move in favour of it at the annual meeting of delegates. He wished to know the views of the club on the subject.. Other matters referred to m his letter were the date the association tournament and the holding of a local Christmas tournament.—The letter was received. The proposition of holding an Easter tournament was negatived. _ It was decided to favour the association! tournament being held at the latter end of February. . The desirableness of holding a Christmas tournament the same year asi the association's tournament was held in Christchurch was affirmed. The Secretary referred to the subject of each member insuring his individual property. He had taken out a policy for £2OO on general effects, but each member could be covered by insurance for £5 on payment of 6d a year if he so desired—lt was resolved that the insurance premium be paid out of the funds of the club. It was resolved that new members shouid be admitted to the club only by ballot, and that applicants for admission under the age of 25 years must be nominated by at "least two members of the club. The rest of the motion dealt with balloting, It was resolved that no member be allowed to take part in any club prize match unless his bowls had been tested, passed, and stamped by the official bowl tester of the N.Z.B.A.
