ANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

The annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was hold last week; present— Messrs A. Boyle. (chairman), J. D. Hall, H. J. Beawick, K. Neave, C. W. Reid, N. G. W. Hammer* H. Quane, C. G. Dalgety, A. C. Rolloston, and G. D. Greenwood.

The committee in its; report congratulated the members upon the satisfactory balance sheet, stating that notwithstanding an increase of £2400 in stakes, and the expenditure of over £7500 in improvements, the cash balance was only about £650 lass than in the previous season. The increased taxation had hardly been felt, as it had applied only to the autumn meeting, but it was estimated that for the ensuing season it would add £2500 to the expenditure. The club had to deplore the deaths of two old and valued officials in Messrs R. M. Morten and T. A. Bullick. Mr Morten was the oldest member of the club, and acted in the capacity of steward and committeeman for many years. Mr Bullick was also a committeeman for several years. The balance sheet showed receipts «.mouating to £48,126 16s 9d, including a balance of £856 8s 3d brought forward from the-previous year, while the expenditure was £4-7,695 lis 3d, leaving a credit balance of £431 5a 6d. A credit balance of £3637 14s 6d was shown on the profit and loss account.

The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the . report and balance sheet, said that, although not able to place before the members a balance sheet quite equal to that of the previous year, he had the honour of being able to show that the club was in a very flourishing condition. Compared with the previous year all sources of revenue, with the exception of the? totalisator and bookmakers, had held their own. Bookmakei'S showed a small decrease, and the totalisator, owing to £SOOO less having been invested and the fact that the increased accommodation ' had correspondingly increased the working charges, was about £BOO less. On the expenditure side there was not a great deal of difference. Stakes had been increased by £2400 and taxation was more, as, for instance, at the Easter meeting in 1909 the stamp duty paM amounted to £474 lis sd, while this year it had totalled £692 8s 3d. There wou.ld, of course', be a much larger increase in taxation in the future, as they had experienced the effect of the amendments to the Gaming and Stamp Duties Act only at one meeting. Assuming the revenue l remained the same, it was anticipated the tax would be more than in 1909. The new stand and improvements account included the building of the new members' stand over the stand in the shilling enclosure, the totalisator house, ■> the caretaker's cottage and the people's open stand in the shilling enslosure. The new stand, he thought, was admitted to be a great boon to both members and the public. The extra charge of 2s 6d at the Grand National and spring meetings had been imposed purely to prevent overcrowding, and not for the purpose of obtaining increased revenue. The whole of the buildings and railing had been painted at a nosfc of £550, and the water supply had bean connected at the main entrance and gardens adjoining, and it had also been -found necessary to connect the new buildings with the fresh water supply. The rates, taxes, and insurance account was more- than double, but the committee had considered it advisable to insure the buddings up to their full insurable value. Over £3OO had been spent on work the- committee considered advisable, and for this purpose labour had been obtained from the ranks of the unemployed, which to a oertain extent must have alleviated their difficulties during last winter. Notwithstanding the large expenditure during the year, the actual cash balance was under £IOOO less than that of 1909. The improvements now in hand were the erection of some more scraping sheds, which the committee considered were badly needed. A slight alteration had been made in the five-furlong course, which he hoped would prevent crowding towards the point where this course joined the course proper. The Course Committee had also under consideration the possibility of making a new sixfurlong course, the home turn of the old course having been the cause of more than one serious accident in short races. The committee considered that if the revenue remained satisfactory trie-re won I*', necessity at present for reducing stakes; but it must be borne in mind that the increased taxation would not leave a great margin for further increases in stakes or for further improvements; in fact, it would he necessary to proceed with very great caution. The licensed bookmakers had, he was glad to say, fulfilled their obligation's during the season in a satisfactory manner, and it was most gratifying for the club lo find itself in the position in which, by the recent appeal against unregistered bookmakers, the law had placed it. Mr Wanklyn had, as usual, carried' out his duties with every credit, and it was unnecessary -n Wl members fcbg-t unless (••" • business of the club was overlooked by an efficient officer and staff it would not long remain in its present satisfactory condition. During the season the fields at each meeting had been exceptionally good the result of Mr Henrys's handicapping. It was needless to say that as handicapper Mr Henrys had the committee's entire confidence. Mr Hartgill bad also carried out the responsible duties of judge most efficiently and conscientiously. The caretaker, Mr Mitchell, during the past year had also dene his work to the committee's entire satisfaction'. The members ' would, _ he felt sure, have noticed the many alterations for the better that had taken place under Mr Mitchell's supervision, and had been creditably carried out by the club's employees. It was with sincere regret that he mentioned the loss to the Empire by the death of King Edward', a gracious sovereign, beloved by all his subjects, one of the best supporters of the turf, and a breeder of the highest class stock. His many famous turf victories were invariably received with true British enthusiasm. They had to de-plo-e the great less the club had sustained by the death of Mr R. M. Morten, who became a member in the early sixties, and also by the death of Mr T. A. Bullick. Both frentlemon had always taken a very great interest in racing, and had also done their part in the management of the club. Mr Wardrop had resigned from the committee on leaving for Australia, and his plnce had been ably filled bv Mr Richard Allen. The motion for the adoption of the report and balance sheet was seconded by Mr Dalgety,- and carried unanimously. The election of officers 'resulted as follows :—Stewards—Messrs A. Bovie, C. G. Dolgety, G. J. GiW BL A. Knkht." B. L.

Lane, J. B. Reid, R. H. Rhodes, D. Rutherford, G. B. Starky, E. C. Studholme, and T. Teschamakex; committee — Messrs L. D. Acland, R. Allen, A. Boyle, J. E. Buchanan, C. G. Dalgety, G. Gould, J. D. Hall, B. A. Lane, R. M. Macdonald, C. P. Murray-Aynsley, H. Quane, C. W. Reid, and C. Hood Williams; honorary treasurer, Mr F. H. Pyne. The following new members were elected: Messrs T. Blackley H. Cotterill, H. M. C. Dampier-Crcssley, D. F. Dennehy, W. Fox, A. Hill, F. K. Hunt, F. J. Jaggar, E. G. Kerr, J. F. Studholme, and J. S. Thompson. On the motion of Mr Rolleston a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman and the committee *was carried unanimously. Mr Greenwood said that lie would be pleased, as an owner, if the club would abandon the system of automatically penalising in subsequent handicap events' horses which had won a weight-far-age race. The Chairman said th& incoming committee would consider the matter. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND NORTH OTAGO WINTER MEETING. (Fhou Otje Special Refoetee.) Fiest Day—Tuesday, May 24.
