FATALITY IN SOUTHLAND.

SAWMILL EMPLOYEE KILLED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, May 29,

A fatal accident occurred Saturday afternoon at Messrs Broad, j-nall, and Co.'s sawmill at Te Tumutu, five or six miles beyond Orepuki, a young man named James Dowling being_ the victim. Dowling was locomotive driver at the mill, and was in charge of the engine (which was used for hauling) and two trolileys at the time of the accident. Particulars of the accident have not yet come to hand, but the word received is to the effect that it was caused by the trolleys running away and becoming onmanageable. It is assumed that Dowling jumped or fell from the engine, and was run over. He was so seriously injured that he died after lingering for two hours. Dowling is one of a family well known in Southland in connection with bushcraft and with cycling. He is a brother of M. Dowling, the wellknown secretary of athletic bodies in the Waiau district. His parents reside at Longbush.
