POLAR EXPLORATION
LONDON, May 25
The Terra Nova's crew of 60 includes three champion boxers from the navy. She will call at Madeira, the Cape, and Australia, and then stay four weeks in New Zealand. The sum of £40,000 has been practically collected. Captain Scott has tested the motor sledges, and expects to travel from 10 to 15 miles daily. May 27. Lecturing at the Royal Institution on hie final journey from his winter station at M'Murdo Sound, Captain Scott said it was probable that after the first stage the advance would have to be made by the men's unaided efforts. It was only possible to beat Shackleton's record by taking a larger party and sending it back in sections at intervals. The achievement of the South Pole was by no means a certainty. MELBOURNE, May 25. The Federal Government has declined to accede to Captain Scott's request to grant £IOOO towards his South Pole expedition. Mr Bachelor states that as the Imperial Government's contribution was £20,000, and as Sir E. Shackleton did not receive help from the Imperial Government, the conditions of the two expeditions are not the same.
