PORTOBELLO ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Portobcllo Road Board, held on April 28, was attended by Messrs J. Dickson (chairman), S. Miller, W. Raynbird, F. E. Hellyer, W. D. Wright, J. Macandrew, J. Bacon, J. J. M'Cartney, H. V. Fulton, and the clerk (Mr S. Hinckley). the Anderson's bay bridge. The Chairman verbally reported that the surfacemen had been engaged on the usual works since last meeting. An informal meeting of the North-East Harbour representatives and himself had been held in Mr Fulton's office, Dunedin to deal with the collapse of the Anderson's Bay bridge, and it was decided to have a report upon the matter from Mr F. J. Williams, engineer. When the report was presented it was found that the matter was not so serious as was thought, and it was decided to\ have the work done at an expenditure of £ll, and the bridge would therefore be open for traffic that day.—The Engineer (Mr Williams) reported that the cause of the trouble was a fracture of one of the hangers of the bridge. He had the hangers removed and new ones inserted. He thought the use of the bridge should be restricted to gross loads of 30cwt, and that all traffic should be compelled to walk across, while particulaa* attention should be paid to carters who, he understood, were in the habit of taking two drayloads of stone across at one time. He recommended that notices be erected at each end of the bridge notifying that unless these conditions were respected the Portobello Road Board would not be responsible for any accidents that night occur. —Mr Macandrew said that about eight yoars ago it was proposed to have the bridge lowered, but the then Anderson's Bay Ferry Com pany objected, and the board was prevented from having the work done. Now it was stated that it was the intention of the Harbour Beard to fill in the area, and if that were done an effort could be made to induce the Marine Department to substitute a culvert for the present bridge. It was an unsightly object, and neither use nor ornament, and personally he was sorry it had not collapsed altogether.— Mr Fulton: It has been suggested to me that a flood-gate could be erected in the same way as at Lake Loo-an, and if that were done it would make a lake like the one referred to.—After some discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Fulton, that a conference be held between the Bay Town Board and the Portobello Road Beard on the matter, but that the board's representatives be not appointed until the new board is elected.— It was also resolved that the action of members and the engineer in temporarily repairing the bridge be approved, and that notices in regard to traffic over it be affixed at each end. NEW TOWNSHIPS. Mr F. J. Williams (engineer) wrote stating that the subdivision of a small township on the south side of Broad Bay had been placed in his hands. The land was owned by Messrs Speight and Miller, and it was proposed to subdivide it into a township and construct a road through the centre. There was a -small piece of land which would require to bo dedicated in order "to make the width of the street 33ft from the centre line, and this his clients proposed to hand over to the board free of charge if the requirements in connection with road formation were* not excessive.—On the motion of Mr Macandrew, seconded by Mr Raynbird, it was decided that the board would accept a road with a formation of 18ft, such formation to be done to the satisfaction of the members for the ssubdivision. Mr C. E. Macandrew, on behalf of Messrs Macandrew Bros., owners of sections 21 to 25, Upper Harbour East, submitted a plan of a proposed subdivision into sections (80 in number) the most of which contained about one rood, and asked for the approval of the board to the road lines shown thereon being fixed at a width of 100 links. The grades had been carefully gone into, and they wore all very easy. The owners were prepared to form such of the roads as might be required to give access to the various sections to a width of, say, 16ft. — Resolved, that the width of the main street be a chain wide, and that the formation be not less than 16ft. GENERAL. Messrs Park, Reynolds (Ltd.) wrote requesting that purchasers of allotments 2 to 19 in the township of Sunshine be given permission to erect their fences abutting on to Moana crescent upon the top of the embankment giving access to their private, paths off the footpath instead' of at the foot of the embankment.—Approved. The offer of Mr Clearwater to break a quantity of metal at 4s per cubic yard -was approved. Mr S. Clark wrote a letter extending over several foolscap pages dealinq- with the transfer of a road line carried out by the board some 40 years previously, and alleging that the old road line given in exchange for the land taken was not a sufficient recompense.—Mr A. Clark, a brother of the writer, attended the meeting to support the protest contained in the lengthy communication.—The letter was received, on the understanding that it was open to Mr Clark to bring the matter before the new board, which could take what" action it thought fit. A quantity of correspondence referring to general routine business was dealt with. The foilow-insr were aroepted:Road formation, Turnbull's Hill. Daniel Bryce. £49 17s 4d; road formation and metalliny, Hooper's Inlet. Alex. Dickson, £9l; breaking: 50yd* metal. Macandrew's Bay, J. IJinkley and A. Rogers, 2s 9d
