ihe Inspector reported that fair progress was being made with the contract tor metalling on henry Bush road. Permission had been received to expend the government vote ■ on Homes Bush road, ihe slip on the Waitati-Wakari road had oeen cleared away. The lengthening of the culverts at Mr Prattley's corner was being carried out. Hall and Reservoir roads required 50yds of maintenance metal before the winter, at a cost of £l3 15s— Approved; the inspector to procure the oOyds of metal for the Sawyers' Bay roads. With regard to the application by Mr Gillanders to have the road through his property graded, there were about two chains that required to be raised 3ft in the deepest part; estimated cost, £3 15s. The metal contract on Adams's road was finished. Several small repairs to bridges had been made. The hand-rail on the bridge at Bay road, Purakanui, required attention. ' Ten chains of Laves's road had been rottenrocked, water-tables cleared . out, and metal binding from Laves's house to the junction of the Port Chalmers and Blueskin roads done. The Torpedo Barrack road had been attended to. and watertables cleaned out in Monsfordtown. Permission had been received to expend the Government votes on the Purakanui Native Reserve and Quarry road, Waitati.—Approved; Mr Gillanders's road to ■be attended to at a cost not exceeding £3 15s, and the hand-rail at Purakandi Bay road to be repaired. The metalling On Allan's road had been completed, and to repair the rotten reck portion would require 16yds of metal; estimated cost £5 12s. The traction engine had damaged the bridge on Lewis's road, but it had been repaired, and was in fair order for traffic. A new bridge would, however, be required before next threshing season. There were 12 chains of the road near the bridge that required metalling, at •an estimated cost of £43. The protective fence had been put up in Harbour road, Kaik. The metal on Porteous's road had been blinded, and the metal on Russell's road was now being blinded. The metal being put on the Puketeraki to Seaoliff road by the Asylum authorities required blinding. There were 20 chains on the Mountain Track road which required regravelling, and Mr P. Byrne had offered to cart the gravel at half cost. Permission had been received to expend the Government grant on the sheopyards, Merton Railway Station.—Approved ; the inspector to have the mctml on the Sea-cliff-Puketeraki road blinded by the dayman, or, if necessary, a casual man to be engaged. The work required to be done to Mr P. Byrne's road to be carried out as per Mr Byrne's offer. Tenders to be called for the metal required ■for Lewis's road. The metal contract for the Hawksbury Bush road had been finished, and also the formation and surfacing on Bobby's road- The metal on the Hawksbury Bush and MAuley's roads had been blinded with clay. Nothinghad been done with the metal contract on Snell's road, and the contractor had left the district. Mr A. Storey was willing to take up the work at the contract price, and he (the inspector) recommended the council's favourable consideration of the offer.—Approved; re Snell's road it was resolved that G. H. Winders'* contract for the work be cancelled, and the offer of A. Storey to do the work for the same price accepted; Winders's deposit to be held till the contract was completed. The Finance Committee's report, recommending the payment of accounts amounting to £3OO 15s Bd, was adopted. The Secretary of the Karitane Domain Boa.rd wrote thai the floodgates towards which the council had voted £5 were completed.— Received; inspector 'to inspect. G. H. Winders wrote that owing to illhealth he would have to give up, the "horse work" for the county.—Received. W H Borric wrote drawing attention to the condition of the Main Port Chal-mers-Purakianui road, especially from Mr White's corner to Coldwater Creek.— "R-'BCCIVOGi The Saeretary of the Otago Motor Association wrote drawing attention to the encroachment of gorse, etc., on the Waitati side of. the Junction Hill.—Agent for the property owner to be requested to cut the gorse. . . Hcsking and Cook, writing in connection with the case of the County Council v. Scott Bros., stated that they had received a telegram from Scott Bros.' solicitors advising them that Scott Bros, had given instructions to appeal to the Court of Appeal against the judgment.— Received. John Reid and Sons wrote, in reference to the township of Osborne, that they understood that the council was agreeable to take over any of the streets therein on payment by the owners interested of a contribution towards forming the same. They asked what streets had been taken over, and upon what terms the council would take over any of the following streets —namely, Bradley, Phcebe, and Rowland streets.—Writers to be informed that the council would take over the street lines mentioned on payment of £5 per street line. In connection with 6ome correspondence from the secretary of the New Zealand Counties' Association, Mr E. H. Clark, M.P., was appointed the council's delegate. In reply to a letter from the Inspector of Factories as to the prospects of work during the winter for unemployed, it was resolved to state that there would be no work outside that done by the contractors. Six residents, in the vicinity of Waitati petitioned the council to metal a few chains of the road known as the Sandv Cutting on the Manse road.—Tenders to bo called for 75yds of metal, the chairman and inspector being empowered to accept a tender to enable the work to be proceeded with at It was resolved that J. Winter ba granted rjermission to fill in the ruts in the road leading to his property with chips from the quarry at his own expense and subject to the inspector's supervision. It was resolved that the inspector be empowered to do, by day labour, the work necessary to put the mountain track in fair order; cost not to exceed about £25. It was resolved that the inspector be instructed to have six yards of maintenance metal placed on the road at John Allan's, Merton; the present contractors to do the work. Also, that a man be engaged to fill up nits on the road leading past (Mr M Donald's property at Kilmog. It was also resolved La ro the ditch at

Waitati that the parties interested be informed that if they were _ not willing to meet the council in providing pipes the council would fill it in with earth at once. It was decided that the inspector be instructed to have repairs done to the Evansdale bridge as suggested at the meeting of oouncillos at Evansdale on the Bth in6t. The following tenders were accepted: Thirty-five chains formation and culverts, Holme's Bush road, North-East Valley Riding —Davidson Bros., at 26s per chain (total, £45 10s) ; 30yds metal Quarry road, Blueskin Riding—W. Sutherland, at 7s per yard (total, £lO 10s); carting and spreading 350yds metal, Sheep Yards, Merton Riding— C. "Stevenson, at 5s 3d per yard (total, £9l 17s 6d). Messrs T. Parat,a and E. H. Clark, M.P.'s, attended the meeting at the invitation of the council to discuss the matter of Government grants already made, but which the Government refused to allow to be expended on the ground that the work was maintenance, and not new work. The position was laid before Messrs Panata and Clark, and both gentlemen expressed sympathy with the council, and promised to give what assistance they could.
