[-.-'■'The .roll having been read, the retiring '! Moderator moved that the Rev. /William i Wright, of Columba Church, Oamaru, be t Moderator of . the 1910 Synod. He said j that for 27 years the' Rev. Mr Wright I had. served the Church well and faithfully, • and besides ordinary work in .his districts had.taken a keen interest in the temperance movement. He was sure, that they would unanimously confer this honour on the Rev. Mr Wright. • _ 'The- motion was unanimously, carried, and the Rev. Mr Wright took the chair and briefly returned thanks for his election. ! ■ .. Second Day—Wednesday. I The annual sessions of the Synod/of the /Presbyteries of Otago and Southland j Were continued in First Chtfrsh Hall on ■ March 23, the ] Moderator (the Rev. ;W. c Wright) presiding. ~ j •'. SPECIAL MATTERS. I Addresses were given by the Revs. J.. C. Paterso.n and W. H. Howes on " The , Church's Responsibility for the .Young" and "Evangelisation" .respectively, and some time was devoted to a discussion on these two subjects. .-■■ LAND FOE KNOX COLLEGE. . After a lengthy discussion in private, lasting the greater part of the afternoon, it was resolved by a large majority—- " That the' Synod agrees to the j request of Knox College Council for the transfer of that part of section 116, North-East Valley, east of Lindsay's Creek; and instructs the Board of Property to have a bill presented to Parliament determining the trusts under which this piece of land is now held and transferring it to the college endowment." A WELCOME TO STBANGERS. The following ministers, who had arrived in the province since last Synod, were inducted members of the Synod: —Revs. W. Spence (West Taieri), R, E. Da vies, M.A. (Knox), A. Whyte, M.A., B.D. (Port Chalmers*, J. D. Webster (Queenstown), N. D. Nicholson (Oteramika), D. J. A. Shaw (Lumsden), S. Gaston (Pukerau). Professor Dickie was also present, and was formally introduced to members of the Synod. APPLICATIONS FOE GEANTS. The Limestone Plains congregations asked for a grant for the enlargement of a manse.—Granted. The First Church congregation (Invercargill) asked for the maximum grant (£500) towards the cost of a new church. The congregation wanted to replace the old building with one costing about £13,000, of which £6OOO had been eolleoted, and £3OOO guaranteed.—Granted. The Opoho congregation asked for onethird of the total cost (over £200) of purchasing a church from the Baptists.— Granted. The Green Island congregation asked for a grant towards erecting a small j church at Cattleyards.—Granted. The Waitati congregation reported that I its church had been Durned, auu wie. oi- • Burance (£400) had been paid. The erection of a new church had cost another £IOO, and it was .requested: that a third of this be paid by the Synod.— : Granted. 1 The Musselburgh congregation asked for
a grant towards erecting a new brick church in Queen's drive.—Granted. The Waitahuna congregation asked for a grant towards the cost of removing the little church there to another site.—A 6um of £lO 6s was granted. The Waikaka congregation applied for a grant towards a new church.—Granted. GENEPAL. , ;' . A number of reports were received, accounts considered, and committees appointed.' ■••' *'-'" '•' The Moderator was requested to forward to Dt Nisbet, on behalf of the Synod, a vote of sympathy with him in connection with his illness. ' ■Votes of thanks were accorded the Revs. Tait and Wright (Moderator) for their addresses during the induction ceremony, and a"- quantity of'.--purely formal business having been "transacted the Synod adjourned till April II; 1911.
