RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

JTAIERI RACES. The. attendance at Monday's maces at the Taieri probably constituted a record, both enclosures being very liberally patronised. It was the autumn meeting of the Taieri Amateur Turf Club that attracted such patronage. The weather was beautifully fine, and the track was in capital order, if a trifle hard. Nine bookmakers were licensed, and all appeared to be busy. The totalisator returns show that the very handsome total of £4518 was put through

during the day, but with bookmakers in attendance this does not, of course, represent the actual money handled. The Mosgiel Brass Band played a programme of music very acceptably. Some good racingwas witnessed, but the starting was not at all times of the best, and some delay was experienced in getting off two or three of the events. The fields were unusually lai-ge, notwithstanding the fact that scratchings were numerous, as many as 23 horses starting in one of tbe trots. Probably the best race of the day was the Easter Handicap, all tbe horses being close up at the finish, and not more than a length separating, the three placed horses. The officials did everything in their power to make the meeting the success it. was. Following are the results : TRIAL STAKES, Of 40sovs; second 3sovs, and third 2sovß. Six furlongs. Mr J. Ellis, jun.'s, ch c Adage, by Gasket—Motto, 3yrs, 8.10 {R. H. Ellis) 1 Mr R. M'Donald's b g Merribeek, by Welbeck, 3yrs, 8.7 (J. Beale) 2 ; Mr C. CANTERBURY AUTUMN MEETING. (Fbo'it Our Special Repokter.)
