TREATMENT OF IMMIGRANTS
LONDON, March 25. The Times' Sydney correspondent cites instances of married immigrants being denied employment because they, were encumbered with children. He concludes that until the New South Wales farmers and squatters mend their ways it would be cruelty to send emigrants with young children or married couples not past child-bearing to Australia. March 28. - Mr Matthews, rector of Catsfield, and formerly of'New. South'Wales, in a. letter to The Times congratulates' "that paper's Australian correspondent on his courageous and outspoken utterance regarding the treatment accorded to married immigrants. He attributes the treatment to the callousness ol companies or non-resi-dent squatters owning a large proportion of the pastoral lands, and says that every expedient is resorted to so as to curtail the expenses and augment the profits. He warns the owners that unless they grapple with the problem right aw.ay the Government will arise and compel them to relinquish large portions of their holdings or tax them 'out of existence.
