PREFERENTIAL TRADE
MELBOURNE, January 19. Speaking at Ballarat, Sir Robert Bast (Minister of Customs) repudiated Mr W. Grookss's cabled statement in regard to preference, and declared that there was no sentiment more popular throughout Australia. Last year Australian preference had meant that they had made a voluntary gift of £282,000 in duties to British merchants.
