DUNEDIN WOOL SALES.

SECOND OF THE SERIES. RECORD ENTRY AND SPLENDID PRICES. Monday’s sale of wool at the Art Gallery—the second sal© of tho present wool season—proved sufficient to ampy demonstrate the reliability of all forecasts made previously that this wool season is to see placed to the credit of the Dominion a more than ordinarily large sum of money from this source of regular income. The sale saw probably the largest entry of bales on record in Dunedin, totalling as it did no less than 24,176 bales, as against a number for the corresponding sale of last year of 20,366. And fast year’s entry was a record sale, so that it will bo perfectly plain that the new record shows a very substantial gain over the previous best. The following is the entry submitted by each firm in the order of selling: Dalgety and Co 6140 Stronach Morris and Co 1721 D. Reid and Co 5767 Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association ' 1577 Wright Stephenson and Co 5101 National Mortgage and Agency C 0.... 2555 N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. 2015 Total 24,176 Th© attendance of buyers was naturally a very largo one, and since the trend of the world’s markets since the holding of the last sale has been in the direction of a full maintenance of high prices for all lines, it was but to be expected that the competition for good lines—-indeed, all linos—would, as a result of the keen desire on tho part of manufacturers, induce a range of prices,, fully equal to, if not better than the prices—good as they were-—of the first sale of the season held here in December last. This proved to be the case, for the range of values shows practically a firming to a slight extent in all classes of wool. The following' table shows the prices realised on Monday, as compared with those ruling at the .corresponding sale last yelar ; . . >

The .demand which occasioned the giving of isiich excellent results •’f.s a very gismcral one, coming from ail classes of buyers, though the Contin&ntal buyers were particularly keen for all line lines suited for this. requirements of tbs Continental trade. American buyers also were decidedly in evidence, and secured a goodly proportion of bales for shipment across the water. Pieces proved to toe in demand, and sold at extreme rates. The top price of the ■ sale so far has been secured by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., with fine' hairs of halfbred ewe wool, grown by Mr William Ayson, of Southbrook, Wa.ika.ka, this bringing 14jd. This figure was also the top price for the first, sale, being secured on that occasion by the National Mortgage; and Ag'enoy Company with, a line of 10 bales sent forward by Mir T. L. Johnetcoie, of ? Waipahu A specially noteworthy sale on Monday was (hat by Messrs Dalgotyie.rad Co. of practically the whole, cf the. merino clip of Mr Tcford, of Olifdon. The price obtained for two specially good bales was 14d, and is a record for the Dominion for this season for this class of wool. For the whole of his clip Mr Telford did very well, securing in the super first, combing , section 13|d, and in the second combing,l3£d. Another record for the Dominion this year was established by the same grower in the. crossbred section when ha secured ISJd. Missrs Dalgety and Co. report having offered 6190 bales.
