PRISONER ESCAPES FROM CUSTODY.
CHRISTCHURCH, January 23. pS'p Burney, who appeared at the Police Court this morning charged w ith forgery, and who was remanded till January 26, escaped from custody when being taken to Lyttelton this afternoon. , lar as can be ascertained, he was placed on the Lyttelton train in charge of a, constable. Before the train left the station, however, he suddenly bolted from the carriage and ran through the train and eventually jumped off on the southern eide. He was last seen making his way, towards Sydenham. Yi _ January 25. Burney was recaptured by Detective Ward and Constable Phillips last night. Detective Ward, with Detective Gibson was waikmg along Madras street about! 10.45 p.m when they noticed a man resembling Burney in front of them The detective went to have a look, but Burney saw him approaching and made off tuam street, which intersects. Detective Ward ohased him and called out to him stop or else he would fire. Burney disregarded the warning and the detective discharged a couple of shots without effect. At the intersection of Manchester street two constables joined in the chase and Burney was eventually captured in St. Asaph street.
