PUBLIC BENEFACTIONS
' ~:■ . NEW YORK, January 5. A total sum of £28,260,000 was given by the public to the various benefactions of the United States during the past- yeair, establishing a record. These include ten millions to education, seven millions to hospitals, and two and a-half millions to missionary societies. f Mr J. S. Kennedy has given, away five millions, Mr J. D. Rockefeller two and a-half millions, and Mr A- Carnegie £1,211,000.
