THE WEATHER IN OTAGO.
I TAIERI RIVER VERY HIGH. The weather with which Dunedin has been visited during the past two or three days has been of a most chilly and 6tormy nature. A good deal of rain fell through-, out- Friday night, accompanied by cold, I strong blasts of wind from, the south-east. 1 Saturday mornL g . brought an improvement as far as the rain was concerned, but the wind was still blowing strongly. It increased to a gale towards the evening, iind brought further rain with it, and throughout Saturday night - raged I with unabated vigour, accompanied by driving showtors of rain. On Sunday morning the gale aba-ted somewhat, but tho day continued bitterly cold and blowy, and r ain fell intermittently. The total amount of rain that has fallen has, However, not been very large, and the system of drainage has not been unduly taxed. The violent south-east ' wind blowing straight on shore produced one of the [ heaviest seas that has been experiencedlat Ocean Beach for some years. The full 1 ! stretch of beach was a seething mass 01 foaming breakers for a quarter of a mile out to sea, and at times White Island was almost enveloped by the seas that broke against it. There was some fear on the paxt of people residing close to the bea-:h on Saturday .night that the sea -would break through the^ sand embankments and cause a flood, but ihe work that has besn performed by the Domain- Board stood the test well. Yesterday- the swell had dropped somewhat, ' but btill there was a very heavy sea ! running throughout the day. On Sunday afternoon part of the properties at the Taieri of Messrs Shand, Kirkland, Murray, and Fowler ■ v*a« submerged, and Mr Shand was comp ailed to shift his- sheep to higher ground, and Mr Kirkland did' the same with his cattle. The Taieri had backed up so as to raise the Silvenstreaic considerably. The Taieri River is very high at Outram Intimation was received in town about 9 o'clock last night that the wax«r was flowing, to a depth of 6in on vh& road at the West Taieri biidge.
