I The Christchurch Diocesan Synod was opened this afternoon. j Bifchop Julius, in the course of his svnodical address, referred to the retirement of the Bishop of Waiapu, and said that every Churchman in New Zealand would rejoice at the appointment of the Yen. Aichdeacon Averill to the high and s-acred office of biehop. Congratulations were out of place' except to the Dioceee of Waiapu, which had called upon them to give of their best. Regarding the Diocetan Girls' High School, his Lordship had received a cable message from London from the Superior of the Sisters of the Church stating that three sisters were to leave England on October 15 to open the school in Christthurch. Lengthy reference wae made by his Lordship to the question of payment of the ttipends t of the clergy, to the primary Church w;hools, to the Church of England Men's Society, and to the Maori Mission,
