CHINA'S A WAKENING
> 1 SYDNEY, October 4. The Chief Justice of Samoa has returned from a visit to the East. While in. China he engaged 500 Chinese to work the German island plantations and to take the places of tbe island labourers, who had lately -been giving trouble. He is convinced that the awakening of China is , perfectly real, the motive being a powerful feeling of patriotism, which has spread right throughout the people. He believes that China will create both an army and a navy large enough for her own defence, but thinks there is no fear that these will be nsed^aggressively. He does not believe China will be ait aggressive Power in the Pacific.
