YOUNG MEN GAMBLERS.

A MAGISTRATE'S REMARKS. AUCKLAND. June 16. In recording a conviction for using obscene language against a young man at the Police Court to-day Mr Kettle, S.M.. made some observations on gambling, his remarks being prompted by accused's admission that he was one of a number who were finding the money for a bookmaker's busines-s. Mr Kettle said there was a number of young fellows who thought they could make more through the totalisator than at their business. They thought it "hard lines" that they had to work a week for perhaps 30s, when they might g<?t more than that by putting 5s on a hoise. As a consequence of this gambling spirit vonng men hung about hotels to get information to enable them to put their money on winning horses. He was not one of those who imagined racing was immoral or that sport was immoral, or that even a sweep on a race was a wrong thing, but it was clear that excessive gambling went on.
