WELLINGTON LIQUOR RAID.
WELLINGTON, June 21. In the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., Mary' Ann Wright (known as Mary Jane Barrie) and David Barrie appeared at. defendants in a. case arising out of the raid upon a Taranaki place boarding house. The charge against the former accused was that on May 15 she unlawfully sold liquor to James Wykes without having a license to do so. David Banie was charged (1) That, being the occupier of the Paragon Boardinc House, he was privy to the sale of liquor on May 15, and (2) being found on May 29 on unlicensed premise*, to wit, the Paragon Boarding House, when liquor was seizeci, he was deemed to have been on such premises for the purposes of illegally dealing in liquor. The case against the female defendant was taken first. Station sergeant Darby prosecuted, and Mr A. L. Herdman defended. Evidence was given by several witnesses to prove the sale of liquor by accused. Sub-inspector Phair pave evidence that he, with several constables, raided the boarding house. Witness seized 88 bottles of liquor, consisting of beer, whisky, and gin. nearly all of it being taken from accused's bedroom. In another room a man was in bed. with six empty beer bottles on the floor alongside him, and another partly consumed. Witness remarked : " You appear to be having a good time," and the reply was, " I always do have a good time." Accused was convicted and fined £20 and costs. The hearing of the charges against David Barrie was acjourned.
