WELLINGTON NOTES.

Bt OSJ.OOXXK.

June 19

Eurus and Northern 'Star will net fulfil their Napier Park engagements. W. Clark returned south last night with Mr Rutherford's pair of junipers. Eurus has developed a bad habit of running off. J. Kail was riding on the second day at Hastings, but he failed to make the Grand National winner go straight. It is expected that the nominations for the Wel'ington Racing Club's winter meeting, which close on Monday next, will be large. The Wang-anui Steeplechase winner Moccasin tn - oke down recently, and will consequently not be soe-n out at Napier Park. Mr E. J. Watt is at present on a visit to Australia. He learned of Monriwee's dca'th in Sydney. King Billy may be used at LongJands during the forthcoming season, and next year Mr Watt may import a eire from England. Mr F. Douglas and .T. O'Oonnell leave for Sydney by the Uiimaroa on Friday next. The full brother to Pink 'Un will be shipped! by the same boat. J. W. Lowe --took Aroha and Jeanin through to the Hawke's _Bay meeting. Neither mana^eil to score a win. Mr D. Rutherford was present at Hastings to see Northern Star and Eurus race. The last-namsd took charge of Pine the first day, and ran off, and did the same thing with J. Kail the second day. The Great Northern winner, Capitol, was only produced on the first day. He bore a rucked-up appearance, and was never promi nenb. Jack Pot is a good solid sort, and would hays won the big race at Wamganui borring accidents. Fpeciosa (Bt. Hippo — Lady Spec) was easily the best of the Hack Steeplechase field on the first, day, and on the second the race looked between her and Jack Pot, who had 221b th? worst of it. Speciosa out jumped hsr opponent, and won comfortably. She was ridden on bc'li .lavs by J. M'Grezor, who was so severely injured when Lull fell at Feiluing in the spring of last season. Few people who knew the extent of the injuries over expsoted him to be able io ride a>?ain. With ths exception of Speciosa and Jack Pot the steeplechasers s°an om at the meetinn: were a moderate lot. j The Auoklancler, Ban -Tonson, was pro- j duced in the Hawlo's Bay Hurdles. He was not at all fancied, and came to grief at the first fence. C. Colcnian returned home with him the following day. If he w a good horse lie may be ticked off a* a likely Grand National candidate. Personally, your correspondent prefers a g-ood stayer like Belario. The progeny of Ths Officer have don-e well in hurdle iace~. Or.- lof them (Commander) put up a good performance to-day, hui iu=t failed to stay out the last bit. Gold Dn<=t is a great Rtavcr, and was well in with 10.7. Jerry 1 i O'Connell rode a better race on him than . on Polyanthus earlier in tha day. Tbzlatter w-as beaten by Ttawhiti (Douglai — Progress), on whom W. Young was £"n to advantage. After the £ood t-howini' lie made the nrc-v'ous div Compass was fancied for the Hawke'b Bay Hurdle, but could only c,ot third. Kairoma, \US never prominent. Two promi~ina; jumper- -->en out at Ha<rinn- wora Eldorado (Gn'd ~R"o c — Fairy Dream) and Gold Shoul! (Gold Reef— Ransjaia). Both nrf len-'-d by Mr G. P. Donnelly to Mr 11. TroutLeck. The former is trained by J. M'Laushhn and the latter by E. J. Rao. El Dorado ran a oiediroblc spcl.pi! tn ?-'npeic < -a., <>nd Gold Shaull cai'ted the field aloncr on the rceond day until he came to grief at a. double. When mere experienced both should be seen to advantage in jumping e\cnts. Mr W. J. Douglas o\vn» a. eood port of gelding in Pikipo. by San Fran — Youncf Mia), ona of his own breeding. He won 1-oth ths Bi'acelet and Necklace events, and in the last-rained event beat Irish Rifle at level weight*. Pikipo is a great stayer, and «-hoi'!d have besn entered for the New Zealand Clip. Mr Frod Ro^ -«nt Probnbilitv and Thetis through to the Hawke's Bay meeting. The latter .-j-an a good second each day to North-East, who is a good one. He won at Wanganni and Otaki, and at Hastings carried 11.3 and 11.13, ar.d made hacks of his fields. He is one of Mr G. F. Moore's breed, by Euroclydon — -Mariana, and was picked up cheaply by hie present owner. Vi (Merriw-ee — Armada) was only produced in the finil event at Hastings, in which she made hacks of the three opposed to her. Waikaraka- (the first day's w inner) \va=, unlucky at the start. Mr Alf. Ellingham, 'vho owii6 Jack Pot, won the Ha.wke'» B^\ Steeplechase iv 1886 with Denbigh. He rode aho Chemist (another of the Painter tribe) in 1888. He also won the race with two of Denbigh's progeny, Ruby and Moifaa. The latter was ridden by D. Watt, who was upon Jack Pot.. Your correspondent wee pr«senfc at

the meeting when Denbigh won. She was successful on tne Queen's Birthday (May 24) in a hurdle race at Petane, prior to winning the big race at Hastings. Percy Martin (now judge at Hastings) was also at Peta-ne, and won a race with Soudan, and R. Gooseman won wdth Mystery.
