RAILWAY INVENTOR'S CLAIM.
PETITION TO PARLIAMENT. (Frou Our Own Cohrespondent.) WELLINGTON, June 10. Compensation is the subject of a petition to Parliament by George Swan Ross, over eer, Chrtetchurch. He stated that in 1838, whtje he was employed as a Boilermaker in the Addington Railway j Work^hopc, he introduced a protection j plate for locomotive boilere, and the in-venti-n was u-cd in locomotives through- j out New Zealand. It had nevei- been i in-proved upon, and it had, he alleged, I been the means of saving thousands of pounds to- t!ie Government. Secondly, ' he introduced a perruel drawbar for draw- | ing the perruel.s out of the tube's in the fire boxvs, which made it a one-man job, in addition to which there wa6 no smokebox door to open and no exhaust or steam pipe.- to discwinect. The invention had aL-x) bs^n a great saving to the Government. Applicant added that he was dismissed the service after having served about 19 yeare continuously in the Addington Railway Workshops and the Public Works Department.
