MELBOURNE, January 14. At the hide sales to-day light and inferior sorts were id lower, but other sorta were firm

ilessrs Waters, Ritchie, and Co. report: We held a sale of hides at our Stores, Crawford street, on Wednesday, 13th inst. There was a good attendance" of buyers, and competition was keen, prices ruling 1 very firm at late rates. Included in our catalogue were some good stout-conditioned hides, and for them secured exceptional prices, 12 lots bringing from 7d to Bfd per lb. The following were some of our best prices: — One ox, B£d; one, B|d; two, 7£d; three, 7±d; one, 7|d; six, 7d; five, 6§d ; two, 6|d ; one, 6§d ; two, 6id ; two, 6|d; five, 6id; six, 6£d; 11, at 6d per lb. In money value our top price was £2 83 lid for ox tund £1 7s 2d for cow. Our catalogue was made up of 407 hides and 318 yearling and calfskins, and we cleared the lot at the following range of values: — Ox — Extra stout, heavy, 7c 1 to 81d stout heavy, 6^d to 6Jd; heavy, sfd to 6£d;, medium, sid to s|d; light, 4|d to sfd. Cow— Heavy, s£d to sfd; medium, s£d to s|d; light, 4fd to si. Inferior and damaged ox and cow from 2£d io 4id; calfskins, 7d to 72d for best and from s£d to 6Jd for medium; while damaged and! inferior descriptions brought from 2d to 5d per lb. Messra Donald Reid and Co. report as follows: — On Monday, 18th inst., we offered at our stoxe3 an average catalogue of hides, all the buyers in the trade attending. We had no extra heavy hides forward, but our catalogue included an evenly good selection of .medium-weight hides. For these there wias spirited competition at prices, if anything, a shade in advance of those ruling at last sale. Quotations: — Ox: Heavy, 665 to 6?d ; extra etout, 7id to 8d ; mediumweight, sfd to 5Jd; light, 4|d to sid. Cow: Best heavy, s|d to s|d; medium, 5d to s£d ; light, 4±d to sd ; slippy and out. 3d to 4id ; yearling, 3£d to 5Jd ; calfskins, s|d to 6|d ; cut do, 4d to sd ; damaged! / and inferior do, to 3£d per lb.
