Monday Evening. No social functions have been held during the week owing to the holidays, and everyone who could get away left town for tire seaside resorts or on visits to friends in the country. The following Dunedin people have been spending their holidays at Mrs Ottaway's, rTuggeta — Mr and Mrs A. J. Howison, Mr and Mrs J D Wood's, Mr and Mrs E. A. Boot, Mr and Mis F. Z. Moore, Mr James Watson, Mr Alfred Watson, Misees Hawkes, Alexander, Thomson, and others, and Mr and Mrs Bundle, Tapaimi. INVERCARGILL, January 3. There is Very little to chronicle socially this week, as a great many people are* still away holiday-making. The weather has b«en anything but for picnics, etc., high winds and frequent showers being the prevailing weather conditions. Boxing Day opened very favourably, and thousands journeyed to Riverton to witness the regatta, and to enjoy the day in that deservedly popular little watering place ; but, alas! in the afternoon the rain came down in torrente. Quito spoiling the return journey for all and sundry. On New Year's Day we had the pleasure of hearing the famous contralto, Madame Ada urcesiey, who was supported by a strong concert company, al] of whom were artifets of world-wide reputation. The Zealandia Hall was packed with a. niosfe appreciative audience. Madame Crossley, who had a most enthusiastic reception, was very generous in 'me matter of encores, on one occasion responding no fewer than three times. Owing to the holidays there has been nothing going on here in the way of entertaining, and but for the theatre Christmas in town is very dull. Miles, Nathan, Reed, etc. Mrs Geddoa and her daughters are leaving this week for Picton, where they will stay for some time. The Bishop and Mrs Wallia have returned fron their visit to England. Mrs W. R. Morris and Miss Morris are visiting Christchurch. ; The marriage of Miss Vera Tregear, only child of Mr and Mrs Edward Tregear, to Mr Herbert Robinson, of Picton, was quietly celebrated on the 20th at St. Paul's pr<rCathedral. The Misses Myr* Robinson «tnd Brenda Yon Dadelzer acted as maids of honour, and Mr D. Robinson was best man. Miss N. Lambert is staying in Nelson for the tennis tournament. The engagement i» announced of Miss I/ucy Simons (matron of the Hokitika Hos- , pital) to Mr Skeete, of Hokitika. I Mrs and Miss Quick are staying at Bellvua for a., few weeks. I Mr and Mrs T. W. Miss Kohn, matron of the new hospital known as the Thorndon Private Hospital, returned from a trip to Sydney on Tuesday.
