CLAIMS FOR ENFORCEMENT OF AWARDS.
CHRISTCHURCH, November 26. The' Arbitration Court commenced its, sittings here to-day, and dealt with a number of claims for enforcement.
An important point arose in connection with the grocers' award. For some time past -the grocers have been employing young women in* their shops, particularly in the confectionery departments. Theee persons occasionally served behind the counter, that being part of the duties of an ordinary grocer's assistant. A grocer was charged to-day with failing to pay these girls the wages fixed by the award for grocers' assistants.
.For the prosecution it was argued that girls employed practically ac grocers' assistants should be paid the same rate of wages as a male assistant, and that while the award only mentioned male assistants that must be taken as concering female. For the defence it was represented that under the Shops and Offices Act (girls were given! tlie right to work in grocers.' shops, and that as long as the wages specified by that act were paid the court had no power to interfere. Decision was reserved.
