THE HOLIDAY.
The 14th (Labour Day) was observed as a close holiday by all places of '-business in Dunedin, with the exception of a fewi retailers, whose places of business remained open in the morning. ' tlnfortumately the weather was anything but settled, and although the sun at times broke from behind a cloud ar.d shed the warmth below, rain showers were fairly - frequent, and the threatening state of things doubtless kept not a few people near their homes. About tho town, matters \vere very quiet indeed. Taking all things into consideration, there was a very fair exodus of people into the country. The Labour Day sports at Outrain attractedf about 2500 people, and the races at gatui about 2000. A number of people journeyed to the seaside resorts on the north line, and to the favourite resorts nearer the city The tram traffic durinjr. the day was in no way heavy, but at nighttime the demands made on the cars proved! quite heavy enough when the theatres die- ■ missed their audiences. Considerinß the J poor prospects thc.ro were early in the] [ week for a fine day. and accordingly for n I general enjoyment, the holiday may bo considered to have passed off very welE indeed.
