THE HEMP INDUSTET.
PROSPECTS POOR. (Feoic Otnt Own Cobkkspokdeht.) v AUCKLAND, October 9./ Speaking of the prospects of the hemp industry to a Herald representative yesterday, Mr W. H. 0. Johnston, the Government grader at Auckland, adopted a somewhat pessimistic tone. " Unless the price improves," he said/" I do not think that more than 25 per cent, of the millers will s-tart operations. They cannot be expected to start if there is no prospect of a profit. Very little hemp is coming to hand," continued Mr Johnston, "and rt strikeis me that many of the flax areas in this province will be the better for a year's rest. The only millers who- will continue operations this year are those who are erty^-t^d d-o&e to » TaiiTTagr or \o steamers, and who oan afford to put hemp on the market at a. low pricQ, Look at this," he said, turning to a bale of nemp that had been received that morning from
Mbrrinsville. "It was not properly » stripped, scutched, or handled. No doubt this miller has been influenced by the low prices in sending in such stuff. This has been neglected."
