RECEPTION IN MELBOURNE
MELBOURNE, August 31
j To-day was the great ceremonial day lin connection with the visit of the American fleet.
The principal attractions weTe the • official landing at St. Ki'da, the procession through the streets, the presentation ; of addresses, and a public reception in the ' Exhibition Buildings. j Hundreds of thousands of people thronged the streets, and every point of vantage was availed of.
The day was disagreeably windy and dusty. "
It is 'doubtful if so many people have ever been seen in Melbourne before.
The Admirals were enthusiastically 1 6heered along the whole route.
It has transpired that the special authority of Congress is necessary before Admiral Sperry can assume -possession of the costly presents made to him during the cruise. The regulations prevent admirals accepting presents.
Admiral Sperry" is prOYi&ionally accepting the .gifts pending a decision on the point- at issue.
