CAVE (South Canterbury).

August 29. — The weather has been very good during the month of August. W« had hard frost till the 18th, whem a thaw set in, and cm. the 18th we had a light fall of rain with about 3in of «now on the hills. A warm day end a thaw followed, and the htlla ere being cleared of jhiow. Mr T. D. Burnett, who is juet down from Mount Cook, says that on a few of the stations there will be heavy losses. MiDonald Burnett, of Sawdon Station, haa bought a lot of sheep to replace those lost in the snow, and Tie has them on feed down country till the snow goes off the run. On the flats the «now is nearly 2ft deep. Mr Burnett says it is worse on tho hills. Feed for Stock. — Spring has set in, and there is some growth in the grass on the sunny faces. Farm work of all kinds in well forward. There is very little feed about at present. When the turnips showed signs of rot setting in some of our farmers had the turnips eaten off by the stock; hence the present shortness of feed. The swedes are the only turnips which withstood tho ravages of the diaxjjond-bacfc moth and the green aphis. Bachelors' Ball.— The bachelors of Cannington held their annual ball on the 14th. inst. in the Cannington woolshed. There wa3 a large attendance from far and near, and one of the most enjoyable gatherings of the kind held here oame to an end in the small hours of the morning. Lambs. — There are a few lambs about) now, but lambing will not be general till the middle of September. Some farmers have their lambing timed for the Ist ol October. A good many fat sheep have been sent up from Southland to the freezing works in Canterbury this «eason. They will go Home as " Prime Canterbury," -so we may look in the near future for lots more from fehe same place "if the turnover is « paying one.
