GAMES.

The following fine game was played between M. Brach (White) and M. Chalupetzky (Black) in the amateur tournament held in connection with the recent Prague Chess Congress: —

Note 3in The Fie.cl. (a) Or 5 P-Q B 4, but White seems to prefer a less aggressive procedure —a tacit acknowledgment of his opponent's skill. The text move, however, has Dr Tarrasch's and Di Lacker's authority. (b) Useless, and against the spirit of the defence, because Black has two Bishops in compensaition for the double Pawn, and is not likely to part with one by pinning the X Xt; and if so. then White may play P-K R 3, when White would have nothing better than B x Xt, bringing "White's Quaen. into. play. (c) Having weakened the King's side with the .advance of P-K R 3, it is safer to castle Q R. (d) Some more loss of time. An advance in the centre with P-Q 4 would be apropos here. (c) No fixed plan is discernible in White's procedure, and this move seems some more loss of time. (f) One mov» could have been saved by doubling Rooks at once on the Queen's file. (g) Intending P-Q 4, but it is too late now. (h) A pretty and forcible final attack begins now. (i) This capture is fatal. He has nothing better than 22 R-Q 3, Q-Kt 5 eh; 23 Xt-Xt 3, B-B 2; 24 Q-Q 2, Q x Q; 25 Kfc (B 3) x Q, Xt x Xt; 26 R P x Xt, etc., keeping only the bad double Pawn in the centre. If 23 ... Xt x Xt, then 24 R P x Xt, B-B 2; 25 Kt-Q 2, B-Kt 3; 26 P-B 3, Q-Kt 3; 27 K-Kt 2, with some fight left still. (j) Very well played. (k) An elegant finish; quite in masterly style.
