CHAHPIONSHIP OF AUSTRALASIA.
DAVIES CHALLENGES VINER. Adelaide Observer, under date 15th inst., eaye : — " Mr A. W. O. Davies is on a- visit to Sydney, andi aa a. member of the Sydney School pf Art* Ohess Club is taking part
in Sydney Chess. Tn 1905 he won the championship of New Zealand. There were five ex- champion's competing — Messrs Barnes, Cle].and, Edwairds, Forsyth, and Miasc-n; in 1907 he was third, Viner being first and S. Crakanthorp second. Last season he defeated Mr Bairnes (five times champion of New Zealand) in a private match by 3-^-0. Last Easier ho won the championship' of New Zealand, again, with a score of 9—l.9 — 1. As champion of New Zealand Mx Davies has challenged Mr Viner to defend his title of champion, of Australasia. MV Viner lias accepted the challenge, and the match will bs played at Perth during September and October next " [We have the best authority fox stating that the match will not take place until after the contest at Dunedin next Christmas for the New Zealand Championship. — Ch.
