SPECIAL SPRING HORSE SALE

Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., report having held a special spring sale of Clydesdale mares and fillies and working draughts on Friday, the 14th inst. There was a spendid entry, over 100 horses of all classes coming, forward, and every young and sound animal in the yard changed hands at most satisfactory prices. Farmers and dealers were present from all over Otago and Southland, also from South Canterbury. The chief buyers were farmers who were in search of well-bred mares and. fillies and useful farm horses fit for immediate hard work. Friday's sale again , afforded proof of the fact that quality and substance always commands attention, and at theße special sales in particular when animals showing such are offered they invariably realise full values. Some disappointment, however, was caused by ' a few of the advertised entries not coming , forward. This was to be regretted, as we could readily have sold twice tihe num.- t ber of well-bred fillies had they been in t the yard. As a matter of fact this sale , was one of the most successful we have , conducted for some considerable time, and , at no sale for the past few years have we sold such a large proportion of the total : entry. Prices showed a marked improvement on those ruling at our annual winter fair last June. It was impossible to detail every transaction at Friday's sale, but one or two are wortihy of special mention. Mr Robert Cupplets, sen., of Otautau, secured the premier place, and our special prize for highest priced mare or filly with the fashionably brod Clydesdale filly Dewdrop, rising four years old. This filly was bred by Mr Sam Young (Taieri) and sired by Aitkenbrae (imp.) by- Barons Pride, dam Violet by Garrvowen (imp.). She was secured, after keen competition, by Mr Thos. Muir (Palmer6ton) for 91 guineas. Three other high-class mares from the same vendor's consignment sold as follows:—Bay nuure, syrs, sire Prince Alex- 1 ande-r, by St. Alexander; dam by Church- I hill, to Mr Thos. Muir (Palmerston) for 72 guineas. Bay mare, 6yrs, by M'Nab, { by Lord Sali&buTV ; • dam Meg, by Hero, to ! Mr James Patrick (Lee Creek, Out-ram) for 60 guineas. Bay filly, Grace, rising I 4yrs, sire Carmyle, by Kelvin ; dam Miss ■ Wilson, by M 4M 4 Arthur, to Mr Rodk. M'Kenzie (Bushey Park Estate) for 55 guineas. Mr Jas. Patrick (Outrani) secured our prize for the highest priced gelding with a well' turned three year old colt, which, was purchased by Mr J. Jones (Clydesvale) for £47 10s. For other vendors > we sold a very large number of draught 1 mares and geldings at up to £50, and I spring-cart and light harnwa sorts at up to £31. The demand throughout the j auction was beyond our most sanguine ex- [ pectations, bidding from start to finish , being most animated. We sna.li continue the sale this morning. For particulars of entry see advertisement in this issue. ;
