Tlie Otago School Commiissior.ers met yesterday; present- — Messrs Wm. Dallas (m, tho chair), E. H. Wilmof, Thomas MacGibbon, and Hon. H. Feldwick. Leave of absence from the meeting was granted to Mr D. Borrie. Tho Ranger reported on an application from the Milburn Lime and Cement Co. (Ltd.) for right to cross sections 1 and 2 of 29, block I, Table Hill district.—Received and adopted. The Paymaster-general wrote stating that £14- 16s 6d had been remitted to School Commissioners' account, being goldfields revenue for ilarch last. — Noted. The Under-secretary for Lands wrote drawing attention to New Zealand Gazette, No. 20, of March 19, 1908, authorising the sale of certain education reserves. — Resolved to recommend the Land Boards of Otago and Southland to take the necessary steps to sell the education reserves mentioned m the New Zealand Gazette, No. 20, of March 19 last. The Secretary, Oamaru Hospital Trustees, wrote asking if the commissioners were willing to pay share of defining correct boundary between education reserves and hospital reserve at MaerewKenua. — Consideration deferred to nexfc meeting. A letter was received from the chairman of Land for Settlement Department, Wellington, applying for a refund of £48 18s on account of rent paid by Messrs Robert Campbell and -Sons (Ltd.) from March 9 to May 1, 1908, on the Otekaike E-tate.— Agreed to pay amount m question, lees one day's rent. Mr G. Atkinson wrote offering 5s 6d per aore per annum for lease of section 25, block 7, Invercargill Hundred. — To be informed that as term of occupancy has not expired commissioners cannot deal with the application. Mr G. Moffitt, attorney for Mr R. S. Black, lessee of run 526, wrote asking for permission to erect about three miles of fencing from Garvie Bum to Dome Creek. —Granted. Mr L. R. Toswill, lessee of section. 16, block I, Tuturau district, wrote asking for permission to sub-let from five to ten acres to the Acclimatisation Society for a fish hatchery.— Sub-lease ..agreed to. A letter was received from Messrs Kain Bros., lessees of run 327a, applying for permission to erect concrete sheep dip and yards, and to lay 500 yards of piping for the purpose of conveying* water to the house, etc. — Approved. Mrs A. Mi Storey wrote accepting tho commissioners' offer to Ist her have part of run 88, Slopedown, on yearly lease at £3. — Noted. Mr D. L. Poppelwell, solicitor, applied for consent to transfer lease of section 11, Mock XIV, Wendon district, from T. A. Barclay to S. Walker. — Granted on usual conditions. A letter was received from Messrs Lee and Grave asking for transfer lease section 181, block 11, Papakaio, fi"om H. Schluter to E. P. Bur-bury. — Granted on usual conditions. P. C. Hjorring wrote asking for transfer of lease section 98, block 11, Papakaio, from T. J. Hall to G. B. Colccugh.— Granted. A letter was received from Messrs Hislop and Creagh asking for transfer of lease section 37, block IV, Awamoko district, executors late S. Wilson to J. G. A. Ruddenklau. — Granted. I. W. Raymond applied for transfer lease sections 10 to 13, block X, Wyndham, from J. H. Preston to himself. — Granted. Messrs Rattray and M'Donald applied for transfer of lease of section 9, block XIV, Winton, from Jas. Gilmour to Wm. D. Cowie, or to issue a new lease to Mr Cowie. — Granted. The Secretary reported the result of sale at Oamaaru on March 21, and stated that the old rent was £471 18s per annum, whioh had now .been increased to £724 16s ld._ A letter was received from Messrs Tripp and Rolleston applying, on behalf of Messrs S. M'Kenzie and K. M'Lennan, lessees of sections 1 of 44, block H, 2 of 9, 10, and 11, block IX, and 17, 19, and 20, block XI, Moeraki district, to transfer to Messrs F. J. and A. J. Le Cren. — Granted. An application was received from Mr John Caird for sawmilling lease.— Resolved that application be granted, Southland Land Board to be requested to deal with same m terms of clause 247, Land Act, 1692. The Ranger reported re spread of gorse on sections 28, block IV, Aparima, and 32 blook IV. Menzies Ferry. — Lessees to be notified to carry out conditions of lease regarding noxious weeds. The ranger's monthly report was read ant? adopted. The ranger's diary for month was received. A letter was received from. Mr D. M'Callum, lessee of sections 3, block V,- and 13, block VI, New River Hundred, stating that he could not agree to the valuation put tipon the land by bhe ranger. To be informed that the commissioners cannot see their way olear to alter a valuation which the applicant has agreed to. The Secretary reported the following payments on account of primary and secondary education for quarter ended 31st March, 1908— viz. :— Otago Education Board, £1424 lis 8d; Southland Education Board, £591 10s 4d ; Otago High Schools Board, £28 3s 4d; Sk>uthland High Schools Board, £18 10s 3d; Waitaki High Schools Beard, £11 17s 4d.— Noted. Messrs Watson and Haggitt applied, on behalf of Messrs H. B. Courtis and R. Williamson, for right to prospect for coal on part sections 6 block VI, and part 1 block V, Toi Tois, and requesting that m the event of there being no objection, that the commissioners ask the 'warden to recommend fche .issue of a lease under section 5 of "The Coal Mines Act, 1905."— The tenant h&vinjc wanted permission, the coni-

missioners agreed to allow applicants to prospect for coal, it being a condition that any damage to land or fences be made gcod, and all holes filled up by prospectors. Messrs Inder and Cochrane wrote, on behalf of Mr A. Hall, asking for the commissioners' co-operation m securing a level crossing over ihe railway line; also asking that the commissioners instruct the occupiers of sections 21 to 24, Waiparu Village, to open the road to the east, of these sections to give him access to this land. — After hearing the ranger's report, it was decided to call upon the lessees of sections 21, 22, 23, and 24 to remove thoir fences from the road line to allow the tenant of adjoining lands access, and also to ask the Railway Department to provide a ieyel crossing opposite both road lines at Waiparu Township. A letter from the Secretary of Education stating that, as tho -proposed expenditure of £70 on read at Wendon does not appear to come under the provision- of the act, the Minister decline.3 the commissioners' application m this respect, was noted. An application was read from J. and A y Baird for 2000 3in drainpipes for sections 26, 27, tfnd 28, block XV, Jacobs River Hundred. — It was agreed to supply quarter cost of pipes, as the lease had 20 years to run, with option of renewal at the end of period. Mr J. Beer wrote inquiring as to certain runs m thg Te Anau district which he stated, were required for settlement.— To be informed that the commissioners are not aware that any land of runs 301 b and 301 c, Te A-nau district, has been taken as stated. Accounts amounting to £192 16s 4d were passed for payment.
